The ARWU, published by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy since 2003, is the most research-focused ranking. It measures pure research output: Nobel Prizes (30%), Highly Cited Researchers (20%), Nature & Science papers (20%), Web of Science papers (20%), per-capita performance (10%).

Harvard has ranked #1 every year since 2003. The top 20 is overwhelmingly US/UK. Chinese universities are the fastest rising: Tsinghua and Peking have entered the top 30 in recent years, driven by rapid growth in Web of Science publications and increasing numbers of Highly Cited Researchers.

ARWU’s strength (objectivity — no surveys) is also its weakness: it ignores teaching quality, student experience, and graduate outcomes entirely. A university could win Nobel Prizes and produce miserable students — ARWU would rank it highly. For undergraduate choice, ARWU should be weighted less than QS or THE.
