Global University Rankings Explained · QS, THE, ARWU Compared

University rankings influence where students apply, where academics seek employment, and how governments allocate research funding. The three dominant global rankings — QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education (THE), and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU/Shanghai) — collectively shape perceptions of institutional prestige. However, they measure fundamentally different things, and understanding their methodologies is essential to interpreting their results.

QS World University Rankings

QS is the most widely cited ranking in student recruitment and marketing, largely because it was the first ranking to go global and enjoys strong brand recognition in Asia and the Middle East.

Methodology (2026 edition)

  • Academic Reputation: 40% · Global survey of 130,000+ academics: “Which institutions are strongest in your field?”
  • Employer Reputation: 10% · Survey of 75,000+ employers: “Which universities produce the best graduates?”
  • Faculty/Student Ratio: 20% · Student-to-faculty ratio as a proxy for teaching quality
  • Citations per Faculty: 20% · Scopus data, normalised by faculty size
  • International Faculty: 5% · Proportion of international academic staff
  • International Students: 5% · Proportion of international students

Criticisms

QS’s reliance on reputation surveys (50% combined weight) makes it inherently conservative — reputations change slowly, and well-known institutions benefit from name recognition regardless of current performance. The Academic Reputation survey has been criticised for Anglophone bias, with disproportionate respondent representation from North America and Western Europe.

The Faculty/Student Ratio indicator (20%) favours institutions with many faculty relative to students, which correlates with wealth rather than teaching quality. Small, wealthy institutions (Caltech, École Normale Supérieure) score disproportionately well on this metric.

Times Higher Education World University Rankings

THE positions itself as a more comprehensive and “balanced” ranking, with the largest number of indicators (13 in 2026) grouped into five pillars.

Methodology (2026 edition)

THE’s strength is the breadth of indicators, but its reliance on a reputation survey (33% across Teaching + Research) shares QS’s conservatism. THE also uses Elsevier’s Scopus data for citations, which has better arts/humanities/social science coverage than Web of Science but still favours STEM disciplines with higher citation rates.

Distinguishing Features

THE introduced research strength and research influence indicators in the 2023 revision, incorporating field-weighted citation impact (FWCI) percentiles. This is a better normalisation than raw citation counts but still struggles with small, specialised institutions.

ARWU (Shanghai Ranking)

ARWU is the most research-centric of the three rankings, with an almost exclusive focus on hard research outputs. Originally commissioned by the Chinese government to benchmark Chinese universities against global peers, ARWU is now independently published.

Methodology

  • Per Capita Performance: 10% · Weighted scores above divided by FTE academic staff

Criticisms

ARWU’s reliance on Nobel/Fields Medals (30%) heavily biases the ranking toward older, established institutions — it is essentially a 20-30 year lagging indicator. Institutions that were strong in the mid-20th century continue to score well on this metric regardless of current performance.

The Nature/Science indicator (20%) excludes all humanities and most social sciences, making ARWU effectively a ranking of STEM research output. ARWU’s use of Web of Science (Clarivate) for paper counts also undercounts arts, humanities, and non-English language publications.

Cross-Ranking Discrepancies

The three rankings produce strikingly different results for certain types of institutions:

  • École Normale Supérieure (Paris): ~#24 · ~#40 · ~#70 · Small humanities-focused institution scores well on QS’s Faculty/Student ratio but poorly on ARWU’s research volume metrics
  • Tsinghua University: ~#20 · ~#12 · ~#25 · Strong on THE’s industry and citation indicators, competitive but not dominant on QS reputation
  • University of Melbourne: ~#13 · ~#37 · ~#35 · QS’s reputation survey weighs heavily for well-known Australian brand; THE’s diversified indicators pull it down
  • Caltech: ~#15 · ~#7 · ~#9 · Tiny size inflates QS’s Faculty/Student ratio but THE and ARWU’s volume-based indicators moderate

Which Ranking to Use?

The choice of ranking depends on what question you are asking:

  • Prospective undergraduate looking for teaching quality and student satisfaction: QS (emphasis on reputation and resources) or THE (teaching pillar), supplemented by national student satisfaction surveys
  • Prospective PhD student evaluating research environment: ARWU (research output) or THE Research Quality pillar
  • International student concerned with graduate employability: QS Graduate Employability Rankings (separate from main QS ranking) or THE’s industry income indicator
  • University administrator benchmarking institutional performance: All three, with attention to field-normalised metrics rather than overall rank

No single ranking captures “best university” in a meaningful sense — the question is always “best for whom, for what purpose, and measured how?” Understanding the methodology reveals that each ranking answers a different version of this question.
