US News Global University Rankings 2026/2027 · Analysis and Methodology

US News Best Global Universities ranks 2,250+ institutions across 100+ countries. Its methodology is research-dominant: Global Research Reputation (12.5%), Regional Research Reputation (12.5%), Publications (10%), Books (2.5%), Conferences (2.5%), Normalised Citation Impact (10%), Total Citations (7.5%), and more.

In the 2026/2027 edition, Harvard University ranks #1 globally, followed by MIT (#2), Stanford (#3), Oxford (#4), Cambridge (#5), and Tsinghua University (#6) — the highest-ranked Asian institution. China leads all countries with 409 ranked institutions, ahead of the United States (275), India (123), the United Kingdom (93), and Japan (86).

What US News adds that others don’t: Regional research reputation (captures prestige within a region, not just globally — important for Asian, Latin American, and African universities that are highly regarded regionally but less known globally). International collaboration metrics (percentage of publications with international co-authors — a proxy for global research engagement). Books and conferences as separate metrics (important for humanities and computer science, where outputs are books and conference proceedings rather than journal papers). US News is the second-most-referenced ranking in Asia after QS.
